Cake tin conversion charts

These tables are only relevant if you wish to maintain the same height as the original recipe for your cakes. Additionally, if there's a significant difference between the diameter of the cake you're making and the original one, you may need to adjust the temperature and cooking time accordingly. To calculate the quantity of each ingredient (flour, sugar, etc.) needed for your desired tin size, you must multiply the figure in the last column (X BY) by the original quantity specified.

Please note that these tables apply only to round cakes of equal size or square cakes of equal size. If you need to convert round to square or square to round, please refer to the information below, which also includes egg quantities. below for round to square and square to round equivalents, plus egg quantities.

Cake Tin Volumes

There are times when you may use something other than a standard round or square cake tin. Examples include bundt tins or fancy ones such as trains, boats etc for children's birthday cakes. Sometimes it can be difficult to calculate the correct quantity of cake mixture for these tins, so we need to work in volumes rather than sizes. The following chart gives the volume of each size standard tin and using this, you will be able to calculate the amount of mixture you need.

Firstly, you need to measure the volume of the tin you wish to use. Do this by placing the tin on a set of scales and pouring water into it until it is full. Make a note of the weight of water. If it weighs 1.5kg, then you will know that the volume is 1.5 litres.

Refer to the chart and if your tin holds 1.5 litres for example, you will need to make a mixture suitable for a 6 inch / 15cm cake tin as that is the nearest. If the recipe you want to use requires an 8 inch / 20cm tin, you can reduce the quantities by referring to the table at the top of the page, where you will see that for a 6 inch / 15cm tin, 0.56 of the quantity for an 8 inch / 20cm tin would be what you need.
