Réveil de l’Empereur cheese
Réveil de l’Empereur is a semi-soft, unpasteurised goats' milk cheese from the Drôme département of the Rhône-Alpes region of France. Literally meaning 'Emperor’s awakening', the cheese takes its name from the fact that during one of his many campaigns, Napoleon Bonaparte stopped in Valence. One of his officers, a native of St Bardoux, hastened to give the Emperor this cheese, which was a local speciality. The recipe was resurrected in the 1960s.
It is a relative of Picodon, is matured for 7-8 weeks and weighs 60-65g. It has a natural mouldy rind, a diameter of 6cm, and a height of 2cm.
