If you've never tried them, take a trip (or better still, go on holiday) to Leigh-on-Sea in Essex (my home town); go for a health-giving walk along the sea-front and eat a plate of cockles with some buttered brown bread from one of the cockling sheds there eg Osborne Bros. Wash them down with a glass of beer from either of the two pubs, The Smack (named after the type of fishing boat for catching cockles) or The Crooked Billet.
You won't regret it! (Makes me quite tearful and homesick writing this....)
