Khichdi is a mild-tasting Gujarati rice and lentil dish.

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a large heavy pot
  2. When oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let them fry and pop for a second or two
  3. Immediately add the rice ,lentils and turmeric powder. Stir well to mix
  4. Add the water and salt and bring to the boil.
  5. Reduce the heat and simmer with the lid ajar
  6. Lower the heat, partially cover the pot and cook until the rice and lentils are cooked - about 35 minutes

Serving suggestions

Serve hot with yogurt
