Strawberries

In addition to being consumed fresh, strawberries are frozen or made into preserves. Strawberries are a popular addition to dairy products, as in strawberry flavoured ice cream, milkshakes, smoothies and yogurts. Strawberry pie is also popular.

Wild strawberries, although much smaller in size, have a far superior flavour to commercial varieties.

The easy way to de-hull strawberries

The easiest way I've found to remove the peduncle (petiole) from a strawberry is with a pair of long-nosed pliers

I've found the quickest way to dehull a strawberry [removing the peduncle (the green bit)] is by using a pair of long-nosed pliers. Unless the strawberries are very ripe pulling it with your fingers just leaves half of it inside the strawberry. You can 'dig it all out' easily with pliers. Give it a try next time!

How much does one cup of strawberries weigh?
