Red onions, sometimes called purple onions, are cultivars of the onion with purplish red skin and white flesh tinged with red.
These onions tend to be medium to large in size and are sweeter and milder than normal onions. They are often consumed raw, added for colour to salads, and grilled or lightly cooked with other foods.
Red onions are available throughout the year. The red colour comes from anthocyanidins such as cyanidin.
How much does one cup of red onions weigh?
Estimated US cup to weight equivalents:
Ingredient | US Cups | Grams | Ounces | |
Red onions | raw - sliced | 1 |
100 grams | 4 ounces |
Red onions | raw - chopped | 1 |
150 grams | > 5 ounces |
Conversion notes:
Every ingredient has a cups to ounces or grams conversion table. Search for the ingredient, cup to weight conversions are at the end of each ingredient page.
We also have a generic conversion table and a portions per person lookup.
