The coastal parts of this region are characterised by a mild, humid climate, while the area around the city of Modena has a temperate climate with hot, humid summers and cold winters. These conditions are suitable for the cultivation of [[pear]] trees.

The [[Template:Indicazione Geografica Protetta |IGP]] Emilia Romagna [[pear]] covers [[fruit]] of the following varieties: Abate Fetel, Cascade, Conference, Decana del Comizio, Kaiser, Max Red Bartlett, Passa Crassana and Williams.

All steps of the production process have to take place within the designated area. The planting density is limited to 3 000 trees per hectare and the maximum allowed production is 4.5 tons per hectare.
